Project Categories

Which project categories should I choose?

Project Categories:

  • Restoration. Healing degraded ecosystems by reintroducing native species, rebuilding soil health, and restoring natural processes to return land to ecological balance.

  • Conservation. Protecting ecosystems, biodiversity hotspots, and wildlife habitat from degradation or destruction while supporting long-term resilience.

  • Agriculture. Growing food and stewarding agricultural land using regenerative practices like agroecology, permaculture, food sovereignty initiatives or traditional methods that build soil and ecosystem health.

  • Water. Protecting or replenishing water systems, including rainwater harvesting, landscape rehydration, and watershed restoration.

  • Soil. Building soil health through composting, carbon sequestration, erosion mitigation, or other regenerative practices.

  • Biodiversity. Protecting, monitoring, or supporting the diversity of plant and animal species in an ecosystem, including habitat creation and wildlife corridor development.

  • Community. Cultivating community capacity, resilience, and connection to land through collective stewardship, indigenous knowledge systems, and traditional land practices.

  • Education. Teaching ecological knowledge, traditional land practices, and/or regenerative techniques to communities, youth, and others.

  • Energy. Developing renewable energy systems or appropriate technology in harmony with nature.

  • Technology. Researching and developing technologies that support land regeneration, monitoring, or community coordination in service of ecological health.

  • Resilience. Preparing for and recovering from climate events, natural disasters, and health emergencies by supporting long-term land and community resilience.

  • Other. Select this category only if your project does not fit into any other categories but serves ecosystem healing and/or community well-being.

Choose at least one and up to 3 categories that best describe your project's primary focus.

We understand that many organizations do work that spans several categories. Do your best to select the categories most relevant to the specific project described in your application.

The categories you select will make it easier for donors to find your project along with similar initiatives that align with their interests.

Why can't I choose more categories?

Categories help supporters find projects aligned with their interests. Too many categories dilute your message and make it harder for the right people to find you.

Focus on what is most distinctive about your project. Don’t worry if you can’t say everything with the project categories; that’s what the project story is for.

Not sure which project categories to pick? Ask yourself:

  • If someone asked, "What's your project about?" what would you say first?

  • What's the primary outcome you're working toward?

  • Which categories would someone interested in your work search for?
